My interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC News This Week with George Stephanopoulis, and memories of a less happy time on national TV with Jane Pauley on the Today Show.
I’ll never know why Pauley treated me as she did in that interview, but as you see in my book excerpt I believe she felt she could not afford - for her own popular standing with the American public - to be seen as being “on my side.” She totally bought into Commissioner Kuhn’s falsehoods, and I don’t think she appreciated me pushing back earlier in the interview when I exposed her gullibility.
Melissa, your interview with Jon Karl was a home run. It could not have been better! The entire segment was well paced and edited and your storytelling was wonderful. The Jane Pauley tale you tell here is, on the other hand, disturbing. She, after all, was a fellow female pioneer in journalism. And yet she did the cheap and easy thing and sided with the chauvinists.
Wow! You were Great this morning and that JP Clip! So, long ago. Couldn’t help noticing the bad Direction and camera work holding on long uncomfortable Single shot of you while JP spoke! You handled her well! By today’s standards, that wouldn’t even be a “gotcha” moment and seemingly ill-prepared or experienced, she didn’t know how to follow up. She’s learned, but YOU had it from day one & still do! Good Job!
Your interview on ABC Sunday morning with Jonathan Karl was wonderful, engaging — and timely as the Yankees try to hold on again for another Series run…maybe against the Dodgers once again
