I love your writing and am delighted to be in your pantheon of supporters. You have a gift that I clearly do not, and I appreciate being invited along on your flights of thought and fancy. You are generous and brave to share all that you do. Carry on!
Geez Karen, you have me blushing. I'm grateful for your incredibly kind words. There was a time early in my time at Sports Illustrated where I was too embarrassed to even attempt to try to write a story. But with the help and guidance of a terrific editor named Patricia Ryan, who mentored me and showed that she believed in me, I tried again and again to write the way writers at the magazine did, and in time I did start to have my pieces published and toward the end of my time there I was actually given deadline assignments to report and write, like the Sunday that Yankees' manager Billy Martin was fired and I wrote a story that led off the magazine. As is said of us, I persisted!
Congratulations and thanks, Melissa. You've carried on and enhanced the weekly cycle in ways that we TIME and SI colleagues from way back when never could have imagined.
Thank you, Bill. Indeed, back in those days Time Inc. was such a juggernaut that we had the sense, I think, that how we gathered and spread the news would be the way things would always be. I certainly never envisioned these kinds of writing opportunities. Just glad you and I had those years to develop the skills and perhaps the confidence to do what we're doing today. It's great fun to be doing this with you!
Love reading these.. so glad we met. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season. I just turned in my new book on Neil Young. I've been busy. Having fun with my Substacks.. All the best, Melissa
What a joy it is to have your words greet me nearly every day. Often I wonder if I have the time to click and read, but then I do, and I'm always glad I did. Congrats on turning in your book. Always a good feeling!
Melissa, thank you for a very lovely and loving substack. And thank you from my heart for coming to my exhibit. So great to see your face among the faces there. I was so happy to get the opportunity to show you off to one of my oldest friends, Jane, who already knew of your work! Will you let us know when it is time to resubscribe to your substack, or should I figure it's time because it's the end of the year? p.s. Gorgeous photos!

Aww that’s so kind. I must admit, I’m a little surprised that all these ideas keep rising up but why not? Thank you, my friend.
Grateful for your inspiration and friendship, Melissa. And all the fabulous info you share.
